Add all the ingredients to a large pot. Add pears and simmer until they tender but sill firm.
Remove the pears from the liquid and set aside.
Cake
Preheat the oven 365F. Sprinkle cacao powder on a 900g loaf pan .
Sift flour, cacao powder, baking powder and set aside. Pour the wet ingredeints into a flour mixture.
Pour the mixture into the prepared pan. Place the pears in the batter, gently pushing them. Brush the pears with white corn syrup. Bake the cake for 30-45min., or until a toothpick inserted into the center cames out clean.
Let the cake cool for 20 min before taking from the pan to cool completely.
